VCU Health will launch Epic on Saturday, a modern electronic health record widely used by university health systems, hospitals and large medical practices nationwide.
All VCU Health hospitals and clinics are adopting the new system on the same day, with the exception of VCU Health Tappahannock Hospital and its Warsaw site, which will follow in March 2022.
With Epic, a patient’s health record can be easily and securely shared with other healthcare providers inside and outside the VCU healthcare system. This means that patients will no longer need to transport their medical records from one provider to another.
To further improve the patient experience, many patient-oriented platforms will merge into one. VCU Health MyChart, the new online patient portal, will make it easy for patients to request new appointments, review prescriptions and test results, view price estimates, pay bills, book appointments you telehealth and communicate directly with providers of VCU Health. Patients will also be able to easily access the secure patient portal on their mobile phone after downloading the app from the iPhone or Android app stores. This was not possible with the previous system.

The most notable changes for patients include:
- All future telehealth appointments will be hosted directly in VCU Health MyChart. Patients will no longer need a third-party app to join telehealth appointments with participating providers. Patients will also be able to speak to a provider for urgent care needs without an appointment required.
- Billing statements will look different and charges for the same visit will be grouped together, meaning fewer bills, easier to understand, and an easy way to access them.
- The current My VCU Health patient portal will no longer serve as a patient portal for VCU Health patients after December 4. Read-only access to information previously stored in the My VCU Health patient portal will be available for several weeks. To access all the benefits of the new system, patients must register for VCU Health MyChart starting December 4.

The transition will affect all hospitals and clinics in the VCU Health System in the Greater Richmond, Fredericksburg, Petersburg, South Hill and Williamsburg area.
